Basic Elements of a Spiritual Ceremony or Ritual

An Interfaith Approach Adaptable to Most Traditions Many people today are interested in creating a spiritual ritual or ceremony in their home, places of business or some other setting. The ritual can celebrate the full gamut of spiritual events including rights of passage, baby naming, birthdays, anniversaries, home and business blessing, prayer and healing circles, memorials and transitions. Ritual and ceremony enhance the quality and meaning of happy occasions and add a sense of family support and connection during sorrow and loss. The following outline contains the basic elements that can be applied to most rituals and an order in which to perform them. This is only a suggested guide. Please allow spirit to guide you and follow your intuition when creating your personal ritual. Also make an effort to participate in and experience the ceremonies, rituals and worship services of many faiths and spiritual traditions. You'll find that in the "difference" there is really great similarity, connection and of course, a common source!

  1. Create the Sacred Space: Clear the energy of the area where the ceremony/ritual is to be performed. This can be done physically by burning sage, incense, candles, etc., with prayer and meditation, light-work or a combination of these. After the clearing, the altar can be arranged or other physical material set up as desired to suit the occasion. Invocation: A prayer or blessing to begin the ritual/ceremony by calling in the presence of the divine and asking that the event be sanctified and blessed. The invocation also brings the gathering of people into the circle being created. Welcoming and Setting the Intention: A greeting of the gathered and an explanation of the intention of the ritual/ceremony including any explanation of the traditions being called upon. Setting the intention is very important as it is in all spiritual work. Intention carries as much energy as does action in this effort. Elements of the Specific Ritual/Ceremony: The prayers, readings, sharing, blessings, physical activity and participation by the appropriate members of the gathering. Include as many of the assembled people as possible as this bonds the group and enriches the experience. Closing of the Ritual/Ceremony: Bringing closure to the specific ritual/ceremony by acknowledging that the intention has been satisfied, expressing gratitude for the presence of divinity and for the attendance of the participants and guests. This is also a time that any announcements relative to social activities following the ritual/ceremony may be made.
  2. Benediction: The closing of the circle and the blessing of the gathered so that they may carry the joy/healing/peace of the ritual ceremony with them when they leave. This is also the spiritual/energetic closing of the event.

Remember that your most important contribution to any ceremony or ritual is the energetic component called love. Have fun with the celebratory rites and take comfort and healing from the transitional ones. You'll find this work enhances your connection with spirit, your family and friends.
